University of San Diego men's basketball coach Lamont Smith resigned Wednesday night, less than two weeks after he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.
USA TODAY Sport reported Tuesday that Smith would not be be prosecuted by the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office in the wake of his arrest on Feb. 25. Smith was put on administrative leave by the University of San Diego a day after his arrest.
“We appreciate Coach Smith’s contributions to Torero Athletics and to the men's basketball program since he joined us three years ago,” the school said in a news release obtained by USA TODAY Sports that announced Smith's resignation. “Coach Smith elevated the level of competitiveness of our program, recruited an outstanding group of student-athletes and established a strong foundation for future success.
"This situation has been difficult for all concerned and our prayers continue to remain with everyone.”
